One Welshman and his goat: rare broadside takes £1200 at auction
03 August 2017Dating from the early to mid-18th century, the large, roughly 16 x 14in wood engraving called ‘Shone-Ap-Morgan, Shentleman of Wales’ seen below is an exceptionally rare broadside that was sold for £1200 in a Dominic Winter auction this summer.
Pick of the Week: Cabinet stands tall as Flemish highlight
24 July 2017When this cabinet on stand appeared in the inventory of a Gloucestershire home in the 1920s it was described simply as ‘An old Italian Cabinet of ebony and Tortoiseshell’. In fact, it is Flemish rather than Italian and was probably made in Antwerp in the first half of the 17th century.
Meadows on organic auctions growth
10 July 2017While many in the trade believe the future lies in specialisation, Gloucestershire auction house Dominic Winter (20% buyer’s premium) is making significant inroads into the general market beyond its renown as expert in books, maps and other works on paper.

Nothing like a dame for provenance - ballerina after Barre sells in Gloucestershire
12 June 2017The appeal of this 16in (40.5cm) tall French silvered bronze of a ballerina offered at Wotton Auction Rooms (21% buyer’s premium) on May 23, undoubtedly owed much of its success to its provenance.

Family medal group at auction shows how torpedoes transformed naval warfare
05 May 2017The First World War signals the start of ‘modern warfare’ for most military historians. It was when factors such as mass mobilisations, conscription, railways, machine guns, aeroplanes and gas attacks really came into force with devastating results.
Pick of the Week: armchair made from Godwin design sits comfortably in Cirencester auction
02 May 2017A rare ebonised framed armchair after the original design by Edward William Godwin (1833-86) sold for £44,000 (plus 18% premium) at Moore Allen & Innocent in Cirencester on April 21.

The most successful of them, at a record £32,000, was a presentation copy of a pioneering work that has been described as “the first practical statement of socialist doctrine”, Robert Owen’s A New View of Society… of 1813-14.
The early bicycles taking design beyond the Boneshaker and Penny Farthing
19 April 2017Boneshakers and Penny Farthings were the forerunners of the bicycle we know now but were hardly practical as everyday transport for the masses. Step (or pedal) forward the ‘safety bike’.
