The cat’s whiskers
21 November 2002THE sale at Amersham Auction Rooms (15 per cent buyer’s premium) on October 3 had a number of items with collector appeal – none more so than this Wemyss cat, right, a speciality within a speciality. The vendors had no knowledge of the value of the 123/4in (32cm) black and grey cat but bidders at Buckinghamshire didn’t need the Wemyss Ware Made in England painted mark to the base to recognise it for what it was and the cat sold to a local dealer at £4000.
Caughley tops the 1000 ceramics
15 November 2002THAT the Berkshire auctioneers Law Fine Art could garner more than 1000 lots, sell more than 70 per cent of them and reach a total of £160,0000 for this latest of their thrice-yearly ceramics and glass sales says as much about Mark Law’s and Nicholas Lyne’s operation as it does for the general strength of ceramics in these generally difficult times.
Toovey to open huge new Sussex saleroom…
12 November 2002UK: AUCTIONEER Rupert Toovey is to open a huge new saleroom at Washington, just off the A24 outside Storrington in West Sussex. The move, which he has been working on for more than a year, will bring him a purpose-built auction space that is two and a half times the size of his current Partridge Green rooms.
Trade alerted over spate of church brass thefts
28 October 2002Thieves plagued West Country churches over the summer, stealing monumental brasses and, in one case, a misericord. Experts suspect the thefts are the work of one gang, targeting villages close to the M4 and M40. It is thought the thief must have at least one accomplice to act as lookout as several of the churches are popular with summer visitors.
Hepworth doubles hopes
23 October 2002Over the last 10 to 15 years, the market has undergone a slow but steady shift towards 20th century painting in particular the Post-War abstraction of the St Ives school whose geometric shapes and pure blocks of colour are wholly in tune with contemporary tastes.
Nelson’s crest on a farewell wave
17 October 2002Shot by a sniper when aboard HMS Victory at the crowning moment of his career, Admiral Lord Nelson is without doubt Britain’s finest maritime hero. When news of his death, after triumping at the Battle of Trafalgar, reached London George III made the decision to break with tradition and give Nelson a state funeral.
Fruits of the earth yield top prices
08 October 2002With the antiquities market suffering from high prices and criminal scandals and a shortage of good material, it is no real surprise that collectors have turned to natural, as opposed to man-made, artefacts of greater age and, arguably, equal beauty.
Gypsy heritage heads home at £24,000
03 October 2002Internationally recognised specialist carriage auctioneers Thimbleby & Shoreland (6% buyer’s premium) rated their quarterly outing on September 4 outing in Reading as one of their best yet. “We were lucky to have quite a few pieces in the sale which were a bit different,” said specialist Sarah Needham.
Worthing tradition
03 October 2002FOR two generations, Wilsons Antiques have been a feature of the West Sussex town of Worthing and annually raise their profile with selling exhibitions, often with a dash of local interest.
Be it never so humble... a sample of a work of art
01 October 2002Only the idealists of the Arts and Crafts movement could transform a humble display of wares into a decorative work of art, and the small manufacturing firm of Jesson Birkett and Co. had done just that with this sample board, right, offered at Bonhams’ Oxford sale on 17 September.
Trade interest justifies new policy on gems and silver
23 September 2002THERE was no notable furniture in Mallams 495-lot sale on August 28 (buyer's premium: 15 per cent), but a healthy selling rate for silver and jewellery and some good prices for an assortment of oddities and decorative entries, boosted overall figures.
New stance on stick stands
23 September 2002ONCE almost the hallmarks of those corner junk/antiques shops, wrought-metal stick stands these days have a genuine value – a sort of camp appeal utilised by the decorator trade. Of course, the interest in this example, right, offered at Raymond P. Inman (15% buyer’s premium) at Brighton on September 2 may simply have been a greyhound enthusiast attracted by the dog and racing trophy. Whatever the bidder’s motives, the grey-painted stand sold at £790.
Laying down a strategy
23 September 2002LONG a convert to selling shows, Kent rug dealer Desmond North holds another of his regular marquee sales in the grounds of his home, The Orchard, Hale Street, East Peckham, near Tonbridge, on the weekend of October 5 and 6. But even in specialised worlds the market has to be pursued and Mr North, who says he is baffled by what new homeowners use for decoration and furnishings in their ever-more valuable properties, is aiming at this area.
The ultimate toys for boys of all ages
17 September 2002Two D-type Jaguars, one shown here being used as a child’s plaything, the other an actual boy’s toy, both featured in Bonhams’ September 6 sale of sports cars and automobilia at Goodwood.
“Lose not therefore a Moment in preparing the Means of achieving so much Glory for your Country”
12 September 2002Sold for £180 as part of a Hamptons sale on August 1 was the handbill exhorting Englishmen! to take up arms against Napoleon, right.
Syonara to an architectural antique dynasty
10 September 2002WHEN Tom Crowther founded Crowther of Syon Lodge dealing in antique chimneypieces in 1876, the prevailing design trends were moving from Gothic Revival to Aesthetic, and over the next 125 years the Middlesex firm have serviced every subsequent design trend.
Time for another pilgrimage
02 September 2002UK: FROM October 1 – 31, to mark the 602nd anniversary of Chaucer’s death, the Gallery in the Friars, Canterbury, is holding an exhibition, entitled The Canterbury Tales.
Eames’ chairs are design icons but recliners decline in the age of online
29 August 2002ONE of the most widely recognised furniture designs of the 20th century, Ray and Charles Eames’ reclining chair and ottoman, designed in 1956 for the film director Billy Wilder, has also been among the most mass produced. Every second-hand design shop in Britain will either stock a copy, or will tell you they have just sold one, but the recent proliferation of online warehouse retailers has stabilised the price for modern copies at around £2000.
Big Brother – the bailiffs were watching you…
28 August 2002BIG BROTHER winner Kate Lawler is rumoured to want to hold her sister’s wedding reception in the hi-tech TV house, but she may find the Hertfordshire home-from-home that was her prison for so long is a little more spartan than when she was incarcerated there…
Sir Henry’s timely bow
14 August 2002WITH the Proms season now upon us it seems fitting that a portrait of the founder of the famous concerts, Sir Henry Wood, topped the pictures on offer at Bonhams Oxford (17.5% buyer’s premium) on June 25.
