Fairs and Markets
Antiques fairs and markets offer a great way to browse and buy.
With so many exhibitors or stallholders in one place you can view a lot of different items quickly and compare prices and quality.
Depending on the event, the first day or morning may be for reserved for trade buyers before the general public gain access.
Some antiques markets are held weekly whereas some fairs may be quarterly, biannual, once a year or have some other frequency. Check the Calendar section of this website for details or view the listings every week in the Antiques Trade Gazette newspaper.
Cambridge offers a window of opportunity for a Chance discovery…
05 September 2003IN A month when keen collectors and scholars of glass – that ancient but sometimes-overlooked fraternity – are coming into the picture in a big way, glass dealer turned specialist fairs organiser Paul Bishop is holding his second Cambridge Glass Fair.
Rock and film memorabilia sale preview
05 September 2003The Stuart Sutcliffe archive received a lukewarm reception at Bonhams Knightsbridge, but Sotheby’s Olympia (20/12% buyer’s premium) are hoping a stamp design by his famous art college friend, John Lennon, will generate more frenzied bidding in their 201-lot Rock ’n’ Roll and Film Memorabilia sale on September 24.
The authentic Spanish
28 August 2003MADRID organisers IFEMA stage what is arguably Spain’s top fair, Feriarte, at the Juan Carlos I Exhibition Centre in the Spanish capital from November 22 to 30.
Budding talent blossoms
27 August 2003Goldsmiths Hall, the home of the venerable City of London Livery Company, is the venue to check out the latest in contemporary silverware and jewellery next month. Billed as ”the Chelsea Flower Show of the silver and jewellery world” and celebrating its 21st anniversary, the fair will feature 90 exhibitors representing the cream of British talent from these fields with a wide range of work spanning cutting edge to more traditional designs.
Back to school – and the new arrivals take a wonderful view to selling
27 August 2003WELL-established, and increasingly a summer favourite, the South Cotswolds Antiques Fair will be mounted by Cooper Antiques Fairs at Westonbirt School, near Tetbury in Gloucestershire this weekend from August 29 to 31. There are three Westonbirts a year but, with nigh-on 70 exhibitors, this is the biggest.

Boxing clever in Blackpool
12 August 2003NOT everyone sleeps it off on Boxing Day. Lancashire organisers Hoyle Promotions have been organising a Giant Boxing Day Fair at the Empress Ballroom at Blackpool Winter Gardens for more than 20 years and both public and trade attendance grows from year to year.
Return of the Swinging ’60s
12 August 2003NOW in its fourth year The Original London Textiles,Vintage Fashion and Accessories Fair continues to make its mark attracting a different crowd to most fairs, many of them from the fashion industry.
Naworth fair a rare opportunity
12 August 2003NORTH Yorkshire-based organisers Galloway Antiques Fairs continue a busy summer from August 29 to 31 with their fair at Naworth Castle, Brampton in Cumbria. Space limits this event to just 28 dealers but they obviously do business as a good many of them have been with Naworth since the first in 1996.
Paris: Pavillon move to challenge Salon is ‘damaging’
12 August 2003THERE will be plenty of antiques activity in central Paris this autumn, centred on two major fairs each with their quota of high- profile international dealers. A feast for fairgoers, but also behind the scenes a feast for those with a taste for intrigue since, as is so often the case with the Paris trade, there is plenty of politics involved. My Paris-based colleague Simon Hewitt takes a peek behind the arras and reports:
Breuget gem heads watches
31 July 2003Although it was the clock section that provided the lion’s share of the money generated by Sotheby’s Olympia’s June 19 horological sale (largely thanks to their £800,000 Tompion), the bulk of the content was provided by wrist and pocket watches. Offered in a separate afternoon session, they accounted for 264 of the 395 lots.
Antiques are on the up and up Down Under
24 July 2003FROM August 27 to 31 The Australian Antique Dealers Association hold their third annual AADA Antiques and Fine Art Fair at what the association’s president Charles Aronson assures me is Sydney’s hottest venue, Wharf 8 of the city’s Darling Harbour Passenger Terminal.

IFAE say dealer jitters put paid to 2003 Fall Fair
21 July 2003THIS year’s New York Fall Fair has been cancelled but the owners, Florida-based International Fine Art Expositions, insist it will go ahead in October 2004. The New York Fall Fair was launched at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan last September and the second was scheduled for the same venue this year from October 14 to 20.
Cranleigh opens its doors once more
15 July 2003Galloway Antiques Fairs of Harrogate travel to the heart of the Home Counties for the weekend of July 25 to 27 for the Cranleigh School Antiques Fair. Galloway hold two fairs a year at the famous Surrey school, a 42-exhibitor event at Easter and this summer fixture which hosts around 35. Both are generally fully booked with a waiting list.
