Sculpture
A branch of the visual arts traditionally typified for being solid and three dimensional. Media used to create sculpture including stone, bronze, pottery and wood. In their appearance, sculptures may be divided into two categories, either free-standing (in the round) or adjoined to a background surface (relief).
With the development of plastic art in the 20th and 21st century, the definition of sculpture was broadened to include works specifically concerned with the three-dimensional form.
UK’s 170,000 public sculptures to be digitally catalogued for nation
22 June 2017Britain will be the first nation to have an online catalogue of every publicly owned sculpture. Art UK has announced a plan to digitise images of Britain's 170,000 publicly owned sculptures by 2020.

Thornycroft’s thoughtful but flash Gordon sculpture
19 June 2017Led by the 17th century Goan hardwood, ivory and bone tabernacle which took a 100-times-estimate £36,000 from a European bidder (see Pick of the Week, ATG No 2294), a recent sale at Chiswick Auctions (22% buyer's premium) also included a tribute to a quintessential Victorian imperial hero – General Gordon.

Pick of the Week: Skeaping leaping to a new height in Mod Brit market
30 May 2017Dreweatts has set a new auction record for the 20th century British sculptor John Skeaping (1901-80). At Donnington Priory on May 24, this 2ft (60cm) pink marble carving, Female nude, right, signed and dated 1928, sold to Cork Street dealership Browse & Darby for £90,000 (£111,600 including premium).

Stair Sainty's ‘true’ Degas dancer discovery
10 April 2017Two versions of Edgar Degas’ (1834-1917) statue of Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans exist. The traditionally recognised example, one bronze of which stands in the Tate Modern, was the only one known for many years and is a posthumous cast of Degas’ wax sculpture.
Rodin turns heads in Paris and Pau
05 April 2017With this year marking the centenary of the sculptor’s death, Auguste Rodin is much in the news. While the Grand Palais in Paris is marking the event with a major exhibition, Fraysse et Associés sold a 2ft 1in (64cm) high lifetime cast bronze figural group for €1.55m (£1.35m) at Drouot on March 22.
