Sporting Memorabilia & Equipment
This sector of the art and antiques market often generates big headlines in the general media – not least when an auction record for 1966 World Cup is set for example. But the market is extremely wide and varied. Here there really is something for everyone at every price level, whether a buyer focuses on football programmes, historic golf clubs or fishing tackle.
Wimbledon memorabilia served up in North Yorkshire auction
11 July 2017It’s that time of year again, although Murray and Konta (at the time of writing) are spoiling the now traditional game of ‘how early are the Brits going to crash out of Wimbledon’ and a double win is actually a possibility.
Medal at auction recalls when England won the first World Cups
07 June 2017When you hear that a team with ‘Auckland’ in the title won the first football World Cup, two obvious questions immediately come to mind: the first World Cup was surely won by Uruguay in 1930, wasn’t it? And... when have the Kiwis ever been any good at footy?
Boxing clever with Muhammad Ali boxing memorabilia
08 May 2017“Wait a minute. You’re putting my gloves in jail? This is awful. How can you put my gloves in jail? They ain’t done nothing… yet!”
Salmon cast reeled in at Mitchells
08 May 2017Catch of the day at Cockermouth auctioneers Mitchells’ (20% buyer’s premium) sporting sale on April 8 was a cast of a salmon. The 48lb fish, cast by Mallochs of Perth, was estimated at £1800-2000 but was reeled in by a Scottish enthusiast at £5200.
Historian has a swing at covering ‘world’s first golf club’

New angle as fishing fair venue changes
08 May 2017The biannual National Vintage Fishing Tackle Fair at the Redditch Sports Centre in Redditch on Sunday, May 14, which has been fully booked for months, is the last to be held at this venue in its 13 years of existence, as the centre is closing.
Muhammad Ali gloves are latest boxing boost for auctioneer Graham Budd
04 May 2017No offence to Neil Diamond, a highly respected singer, but if you are a 12-year-old boy then memorabilia linked to him is not likely to be top of your present list. Fortunately, the other gift was a pair of boxing gloves owned by Muhammad Ali.
Ashes memorabilia at auction catches attention in cricket collecting field
28 April 2017Cricket can be a confusing game, full of ins and outs, stopping for lunch and tea and rain, with five-day games that can still end in a draw.
Statue of modern golf grip inventor comes up for auction at Bonhams in Los Angeles

Manchester United enamel pin badge sold at auction for 20-times estimate
22 February 2017The white shirt bears a dark ‘V’ across the front more like St Helens rugby league team, but the ball underneath is unmistakably round rather than oval. Then the words ‘Manchester United’ emblazoned below the figure give the game away.
Gareth Edwards Welsh rugby jersey up for auction
14 February 2017Saturday’s last-gasp, nail-biting England victory was hailed as one of the greatest games of the Six Nations championship. Talking of rugby ‘greats’, a jersey coming up at auction on February 18 is a reminder of an earlier international player who falls into the ‘legend’ sports category.
England football goalscoring great Steve Bloomer international caps up for auction at Penzance saleroom
08 December 2016In September last year Wayne Rooney hit his 48th goal for England, overtaking at last Sir Bobby Charlton’s scoring record. But the achievements of a much earlier England star will be celebrated on December 15 thanks to an auction in Cornwall.

18 November 2016Medals won by former Everton winger Cliff Britton (1909-75), who later went on to manage the club in the 1950s, are being offered at an auction in East Yorkshire.
Fears mount over US ‘collectables’ law

21 July 2016Fighting valiantly through the Champions League qualifying rounds after overcoming the mighty Lincoln Red Imps last night, Celtic are well on the way to emulating their 1967 Lisbon Lions European Cup glory.
‘They think it’s all over’… England’s 1966 World Cup victory still holds special place in collecting market
11 July 2016It may only be a few weeks until the 50th anniversary of the 1966 World Cup final but, judging by the way their team exited the Euros, England fans will have to wait a lot longer before their team ever again reaches the final a major football tournament.
