This set of English painted sycamore trenchers were a wedding gift to Roger Simpson and his bride Mary in 1625 from their cousin. Each plate has an inscription that includes either the bride’s or groom’s name alongside verses about love, sex and marriage.

In ATG No 2380 February 23 I wrote a piece on the annual antiques fair held at Wilton House in Wiltshire from Friday to Saturday, March 8-10. It is worth noting that the Provincial Booksellers’ Association (PBFA) is running an antiquarian and out-of-print book fair at the Michael Herbert Hall in the village of Wilton on Sunday, March 10.

MADAM – Further to handling horrors stories (Letters, ATG No 2379), I can remember visiting a general sale at WH Lane auction house in Penzance in the early ’70s, when all sales were general, and spying an interesting painting high up on the wall, was given permission to climb up to see it.
