Mallams

Mallams has been trading since 1788 and now has salerooms in Oxford, Cheltenham and Abingdon as well as a valuation office in Burford. 

In addition to conducting general sales, house sales and a biannual ‘House and Garden’ sale, they also hold specialist auctions of 20th century art, books and manuscripts, ceramics and glass, clocks and barometers, collectables, Eastern and Oriental art, furniture, paintings, silver, jewellery and watches.

Lambarde on Anglo-Saxon laws

A rare work by William Lambarde, the antiquarian, writer on legal subjects and author of the first county history, A Perambulation of Kent of 1576, was another highlight from the library of the late Eric Stanley, professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford (see reports in previous ATGs).

A crayon portrait by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82) surfaced at Oxford saleroom Mallams (22.5% buyer’s premium) together with another of the sitter’s father.

Rare Dante Gabriel Rossetti drawings of a father and son emerge at Oxford auction

Two crayon portraits of a father and son by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82) have emerged for sale at Mallams of Oxford. They date from the last decade of the artist’s life and depict his doctor Thomas Gordon Hake and the latter’s son George Gordon Hake.

Bede reprint prized for illustrious provenance

The first printed copy of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica was published in Strasbourg as early as c.1475 with subsequent versions printed in Vienna (1513), Strasbourg again (1500), Haguenau (1506), Paris (1544) and Antwerp (1550).
