1. Edwardian oak and marquetry sideboard
The very first lot of the Grantham Collective Sale taking place at Golding Young on January 14 is this Edwardian Arts & Crafts oak and marquetry sideboard with an intriguing provenance.
Made by Augustus Henry Mason (1889-1912) for William Richard Lethaby (1857-1931), it was shown at the 1906 Arts & Crafts exhibition held in The Grafton Galleries, displayed by a Miss Antrobus (who probably commissioned it). She was recorded as living at 69 Cadogan Square in London at the time.
In 1984 the sideboard was included in the catalogue of an exhibition about Lethaby by Sylvia Backemeyer and Theresa Gronberg, WR Lethaby 1857-1931 Architecture, Design and Education (Lund Humphries 1984), listed to be in a private collection. A similarly decorated dresser is in the V&A collection.
The 4ft 2in high x 8ft 6in wide x 2ft deep (1.26m x 2.6m x 60cm) sideboard offered here has recently been removed from The Manor House at Market Overton in Leicestershire and prior to 1988 it was housed by the same family in France.
