Lighting
Antique lighting can range from simple terracotta roman oil lamps or a pewter candlesticks to elaborate and impressive chandeliers.
In between come a whole range of different lighting forms depending on country of origin or their specific function. They encompass enamelled glass mosque lamps from Middle Eastern countries; European giltwood or ormolu wall brackets; figural torchères that hold lamps or the coloured glass creations from the likes of Daum and Gallé in Northern France to Tiffany’s distinctive American designs.
With the arrival of electricity, lighting gradually became more functional and simplified. Today lights by inter- or post-war Scandinavian or ‘50s and ‘60s Italian designers have acquired the status of design classics.
Decorative values shine through again
28 April 2004THE strength of the decorative market was underlined by a number of lots offered by Woolley & Wallis, (15% buyer’s premium) on March 16, including the day’s best seller, a pair of c.1860 bronze and ormolu twin-light candelabra, one shown right.
Continental furniture, Sotheby’s
14 January 2004The Continental Furniture sale at Sotheby’s Bond Street on December 10 proved something of a struggle, just like the furniture elements offered the following day by their King Street competitors. Only half the 241 lots got away, with demand focussed more than ever on the rarest top quality.
Linley lights on Art Deco
26 March 2003PIMLICO-based furniture designer David Linley pays homage to Art Deco with his latest furniture launch, the Salon Collection, comprising a console table, side table, coffee table, cabinet, sofa and mirror, all currently available from Linley, 60 Pimlico Road, London SW1.
Seeking enlightenment on lamp
09 January 2003One of the more mysterious objects at Lyon and Turnbull’s (17.5/10% buyer’s premium) decorative arts sale in Edinburgh on November 6 was this Art Nouveau pewter table lamp. Auctioneer John Mackie could not comment on why the futuristic design, measuring 2ft (60.5cm) high and apparantly unmarked, should have eclipsed a forecast of £300-500 and reached £6500.
Passport from Pimlico…
12 July 2002PIMLICO dealer Alexander von Moltke has formed a partnership with the Manhattan interior designers Robert Marinelli and Michael Reeves who operate as RMMR.
Illuminating price for chandelier
23 January 2002Villa Bombrini Sale: TWO days before their main mixed owner European furniture sale, Christie’s also offered a separate single owner auction – Furniture and Works of Art removed from Villa Bombrini, ‘Il Paradiso’, Genoa – on December 11. Just over 300 lots were offered, of which three quarters found buyers – selling to the tune of £1,134,280.
Favrile glass and bronze dogwood cone chandelier
06 August 2001Tiffany Favrile glass brought the biggest money at Sotheby’s (20/15/10% buyer’s premium) 407-lot 20th Century Works of Art, June 5. Foremost was a privately consigned Favrile glass and bronze dogwood cone chandelier, 3ft 4in (1m), with chains, ceiling cap and verdigris patina.
Rare 18th century mahogany candlestand
03 August 2001UK: The rarity of an object such as this 18th century mahogany candlestand usually points to a high estimate, but the £1000-1500 range put on this example by Henry Adams of Chichester at their sale on July 25 had the desired effect of encouraging healthy competition among bidders.
A pair of gilt and cedarwood girandoles in the neoclassical manner
20 March 2000UK: A pair of gilt and cedarwood girandoles in the neoclassical manner, 5ft 9in high by 3ft wide (1.75m x 91cm), from the contents of Barnby Moor House, near Retford offered by Neales of Nottingham on February 24.
English owls take flight
05 April 1999UK: WHILE Christie’s sale of the collection of the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava lacked much of the memorabilia one so often associates with these events, the personal gap was filled in some measure by the elements from The Owl House.
