London Delftware
Salisbury sale includes pieces from the Jonathan Horne collection
28 August 2023The glass and ceramics sales held by Woolley & Wallis usually include several designated single-owner collections and properties and the September 19 auction is no exception
Early English pottery tankards bring strong interest two regional sales
15 November 2021Pictured here are two early English pottery tankards – both of them documentary pieces.
Market-defining auction for English pottery
14 June 2010THE first slice of the Longridge collection of early British pottery and European vernacular works of art, formed over 30 years by American Syd Levethan, was sold in two sessions for £2.93m by Christie's in King Street on June 10-11.
Pickleherring discovery at £45,000
05 January 2009The evocatively named Pickleherring factory is one of the earliest known locations where English delftware was produced.
Teapot is cream of crop
18 August 2004WITH the King Street sale devoted entirely to Continental material, it was left to Christie’s South Kensington rooms to offer a home-grown element with the morning half of their sizeable 393-lot, June 24 British and Continental ceramics offering.
Meanwhile, more traditional values also grow
06 April 2004WHILE Troika ceramics made up the first 150 lots at Burstow & Hewett’s (10% buyer's premium) March 17 sale, there was also more traditional fare on offer, such as this 9in (22cm) diameter pair of mid-18th century English (probably London) delft plates, right, each with a painted design of a cockerel and a flower in blue, green and orange.
17th century formulae for success
27 February 2004KENSINGTON ceramics dealer Garry Atkins holds his traditional annual exhibition of English pottery at his gallery at 107 Kensington Church Street, London W8 from March 9 to 20. There are 47 specially chosen items in the catalogue, which is free to those who attend the show or £8 by post.
The eyes have it as plate tells a tale of libel and reform…
08 January 2004THE inscription Wilkes And Liberty No. 45 on this 9in (23cm) diameter Lambeth delftware portrait plate is as good as a date as it refers to the publication of the 45th issue of John Wilkes’ sharp-tongued periodical The North Briton.
Forget Aladdin, here’s Cadman’s Cave
10 September 2002The Margaret Cadman Collection - Preview: The short supply of good quality period ceramics (indeed of all antiques) compared to the golden era of past collecting is a constant lament these days and one often wonders just what has happened to all of them? For several thousand pieces the answer is that they have been squirrelled away for decades in a large Victorian house on the South Coast.
